When I was little, my grandma said we could only have 3 sheets (she was thrifty). So then, I would fold.

Now that I buy my own damn toilet paper, I crumple.

I crumple as I feel this uses less toliet paper. As folding you would need more because it's a larger area and you would need more so as not to have leakage through to your hands/fingers.

With crumpling you have a smaller area but larger volume between your fingers/hands.

I find that when I crumple rather than fold, there's more of a likelihood of a finger going through the paper and coming out, shall we say, soiled.

Reminds me of a joke: A woman was admiring herself in the mirror one day and mentions to her husband that she felt her breasts were too small. He said to rub some TP between them cuz look what it did to her ass.

A little of both, I think. Definitely more crumple than fold.
