Blogging Question
Just curious: Who were some of the first blogs that you ever read? And I only mean for starters, not once you began blogging. Unless, of course, you one day decided that you would start something called a "web log" and people could read about your personal observations, and you are the One responsible for the blogosphere.
Me? Well, the very first blogs that I read regularly were, Frizzensparks, Blackfive, Bad Example, Bloodletting, and Misha. Very soon after, I had added A Sailor in The Desert, Mostly Cajun, and USS Neverdock, with Boudicca coming right on their heels. Shortly after, Grau (a co-worker) and Harvey (an irritating nag) suckered me into starting my own blog. Since then, I've added a ton of regular reads. Many I'd like to meet... and I've already met a few. Since late last June, I've had the privilege to meet nearly a dozen bloggers, and talk to a couple more by phone. All I've met and talked to have been great people. I'm looking forward to meeting many more in the future... hopefully very soon.
But to add a second part to the question: Do you still read the one's who were there at the beginning?
Unfortunately, no. Not regularly. I've got them all blogrolled, and I put in occasional visits, but only a few of these folks are still daily reads. I don't really know why the others have fallen out of my attention. I won't beat myself up for it, but I do feel kinda bad.
Anyway, how about you?
Oh, and just so you know; Harvey really is an irritating nag, but he's still a pretty decent guy. Who now owes me a C-note... :)

I read that one and only that one every day for awhile. One day I got bored and started reading all the stuff in the sidebars. That led me to the Alliance. I wanted to play in the Alliance, too, so I made a blog. Whee.
Posted by: Ogre at October 5, 2005 02:00 PMMy first blog was Lt SMASH, now Citizen SMASH, the Indepundit. I still read him, although he ironically enough posts less frequently than he did from Kuwait. From there I started picking through his blogroll, including the enigmatic Xrlq, Da Goddess, and a blog that used to be known as "The Accidental Jedi" until Deb married Jay and they started Accidental Verbosity (and a family). I used to read the milbloggers like Blackfive and Mudville Gazette and others way more than I do now, and I attribute that to the fact that DH is no longer in quite so much danger of getting sent to the sandbox and my brother-in-law and my husband's former brothers in arms are all back safe and sound.
Posted by: caltechgirl at October 5, 2005 02:06 PMHmmm, Blackfive, Bill Whittle, Mudville, Smash- I guess when I really started getting into blogs was when the boys were just joing the Army and #1 was still in the Corps, so lots of milblogs. Alot of them are no longer writing, but I still check out Matt and Greyhawk every day. Things change! I read more of your blog and blog family- Tammi, Harvey, Bou, Army Wife- than I do anything else these days.
Posted by: Marty at October 5, 2005 02:13 PMStill read the first 2 I read initially... Harvey at Bad Example and Bou at Boudicca's Voice. Have added a lot since then. But some don't get as much attention as others depending on my mood.
Posted by: vw bug at October 5, 2005 02:38 PMI started reading Frizzen Sparks(long time friend) and one day for some reason I can't remember I jumped over to check out Bad Example(can confirm horrible nag accusation), Then Bou started her site and it was just those three for a long time. Now I have my my daily reads (Which I need to update as some don't exist anymore, other's I don't read anymore, and there are ones I do that aren't on there)
Of course I have my favorites, but I don't want to make anyone jealous so I won't list those.
Posted by: Contagion at October 5, 2005 03:05 PMVWBug's Onehappydogspeaks got me started and then Boudicca's Voice and Bad Example. I am slowly making my way through the family blog roll and haven't established a reading pattern yet. So many blogs so little time.
Posted by: Sticks at October 5, 2005 03:37 PMHmmm... as I recall my husband found Andrew Sullivan - who was linked from somewhere else on the net that he was reading - from there I found Lileks and Instapundit and read those 3 just about exclusively for a while (I was busy working and didn't have a fast connection back then).
Then I started reading Rachel Lucas, Blackfive, and USS Clueless... I found Harvey at Blackfive along with Laughing Wolf and Electric Venom... it branched out from there. Naturally Harvey nagged me until I started my own blog out of self defense.
I don't read Andrew Sullivan at all anymore as he seems to have gone completely off the deep end and Rachel Lucas hasn't really been blogging since she was in college (she used to do some fine rants). Everyone else I still read.
Posted by: Teresa at October 5, 2005 04:43 PMI started at IMAO and MountaineerMusings which led me to Bad Example and a few others. The few others have fallen off my radar and in place are the members of the family and a few new others. . . I wish I could meet everyone! But, I'm like the only one here in PA. Jeff at Oh Dark Thirty is here too, but temporarily insane: http://eldershipofsamogitia.blogspot.com/
Posted by: oddybobo at October 5, 2005 04:44 PMI started out with SMASH and Blackfive and Instapundit. They were followed closely by Lileks, IMAO and Bad Example.
I still read (daily) the blogs that I started out with -- though now I am reading more personal blogs than political, informational or even mil-blogs. Go figure. I probably read 30 blogs daily (scary, I know). And the bad example family has the most fun, IMO. :)
Posted by: Richmond at October 5, 2005 05:05 PMSmash, Blackfive, Mudville, Neptunus Lex and Laughing Wolf. All are still daily hits. Blackfive led me to Harvey, who eventually took pity on this poor orphan girl and adopted her.
I still remember when Blackfive announced Teresa had her own site - I've hit her at least 1x a day since her first post.....memories...............
Posted by: Tammi at October 5, 2005 07:25 PM... the blogs that I read before I started a blog aren't even on my blogroll now... once you get your own blog, a lot of how you view other websites changes...
Posted by: Eric at October 6, 2005 12:15 PMMy first blog was Grau at Frizzensparks. His Retrosexual Post was in our newspaper. Then John at Castle Argghhh! and Beth at She Who Will Be Obeyed. Then Harvey... the last three were within a month of starting to read Grau. Then I started a blog and kept pretty close to the Family only, adding you, as you were one of my first readers as soon as you started. (You won my first contest, remember?!! The answer was: Hungarian.)
I still read them. Everyone still blogs... and they all make me laugh as much as they did when I first started. BE family and those who I've added...
This reminds me that I need to update my blogroll. There are folks I need to add and folks who have stopped. I'm bad at blog maintenance.
